6 Senators,8 Militant Solons Skip PGMA's Last SONA

Eight leftist party-list congressmen yesterday declared they will boycott President Arroyo’s State of the Nation Address (Sona) next week while three senators warned that they will not take the matter sitting down should Malacañang and the House leadership renege on their statements that the joint session of the two Houses will not be used as a forum to convene a constituent assembly (con-ass).

Representatives Satur Ocampo, Teodoro Casiño and Neri Colmenares of Bayan Muna, Liza Maza and Luzviminda Ilagan of Gabriela, Rafael Mariano and Joel Maglunsod of Anakpawis and Raymond Palatino of Kabataan, in a joint statement, said they would would rather join the protest actions outside the

Batasan Pambansa Complex in Quezon City than listen to President Arroyo’s "lies" and "illusions."

"As in all her eight previous Sonas, Gloria (Arroyo) tries to foster the illusion that the Philippines is on the verge of becoming an industrialized country, with hallucinations of faster economic growth through ambitious, unrealistic ‘growth area’ development plans, and worse, projects that offer huge chunks of our national territory for exploitation by foreign investors via Cha-cha," the lawmakers told a press conference.

Maglunsod, for his part, said "Mrs. Arroyo does not deserve an audience."

The eight militant lawmakers called on their colleagues to join then in the boycott and to finally withdraw their support to a resolution calling for the convening of Congress into a con-ass to amend the 1987 Constitution and prolong Mrs. Arroyo’s stay in power.

Senators Rodolfo Biazon, Francis "Chiz" Escudero and Pia Cayetano, for their part, warned that any attempt to use Congress’ reopening of sessions on July 27 will be met by strong protest, including that of staging a walkout.

"For now, I will take the Speaker’s word that he’ll be able to rein in his colleagues from forcing the joint Sona assembly into an illegal constituent assembly. I’ll hold him to his word, albeit with much skepticism. It’s my responsibility to attend Sona as a nationally elected legislator, but I’m also ready to walk out at any indication they’ll hijack it as part of my sworn duty to serve our people and protect our Constitution," Cayetano said.

Biazon is planning of doing the same, as he announced his decision to attend the proceedings on Monday, saying "the moment that anyone will try to convert the Sona into a constitutional assembly of Congress, I am going to get out of that session hall faster than the speeding bullet."

"I hope that Nograles’ assurances that there will be no con-ass at the Sona are true. As a fellow lawyer, I believe the Speaker will not allow this to happen," Escudero said.

"However, if this is another veiled attempt to calm the people, then they should prepare to meet a tidal wave of protest. To use the Sona in railroading the Cha-cha is patently illegal and blatantly immoral," he noted.

Minority Leader Aquilino Pimentel Jr., however, remained skeptical as to what will really transpire, questioning Nograles’ motives as the House leader himself had also said Cha-cha is back on track and remains a priority of the House of Representatives.

Makati Mayor and United Opposition (UNO) president Jejomar Binay said the opposition is prepared to counter any attempt by Mrs. Arroyo’s congressional allies to convert the joint session of Congress into a con-ass.

According to him, he is unconvinced by the statement of administration lawmakers denying any plan to call for a con-ass immediately after Mrs. Arroyo delivers her Sona.

"The assurances do not sound reassuring enough for us in the opposition to relax our vigilance," he said.

"In fact, the administration has a track record of doing the opposite of what it says. Remember that Mrs. Arroyo had said in 2002 that she will not run for president, and a few months back, House allies also claimed they will not push for Con-Ass," Binay said.

He added the lawmakers are being less than honest with the public when they claimed they would not use the Sona to convene a con-ass.

Binay also described the crowd dispersal management competition held by the Philippine National Police (PNP) as an attempt to intimidate protesters on July 27.

At least 12,000 cops will be deployed during the Sona.

"The PNP should at least be credited for being more creative in sending its message to those who will join the anti-Sona rally. The event may be described as a competition, but the message is clearly intended to intimidate the opposition," he said.

In contrast, Malacañang reiterated that the President will not delve on the proposed con-ass in her Sona.

Deputy presidential spokesman Lorelei Fajardo said Mrs. Arroyo will talk about the economy and education.

She added the Chief Executive’s Sona would not only enumerate her accomplishments but also list her priorities in her remaining months in office.

The Palace also branded as "outrageous" former Speaker Jose De Venecia’s allegations.

Presidential adviser for political affairs Gabriel Claudio said De Venecia’s allegations would be an "injustice" to his fellow lawmakers and would also demean the significance of the Sona.

"The former Speaker should not unduly alarm and agitate the public about outrageous scenarios for convening a constituent assembly, which we do not believe is within the contemplation of the present House leadership and certainly not in the Palace agenda," he stressed.

Party-list representatives, senators to boycott SONA
PARTY-LIST representatives and some senators will boycott the ninth state of the nation address (SONA) of President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo amid fears that the House of Representatives majority will use the day to convene Congress into a constituent assembly to amend the Constitution.

Party-list representatives from Bayan Muna, Gabriela, Anakpawis and Kabataan claimed that aside from the Charter change agenda, the SONA will only feature false accomplishments of the Arroyo administration.

"As in all her eight previous SONAs, Gloria tries to foster the illusion that the Philippines is on the verge of becoming an industrialized country, with hallucinations of faster economic growth through ambitious, unrealistic growth area development plans, and worse, projects that offer huge chunks of our national territory for exploitation by foreign investors via Charter change," they said in a joint statement yesterday.

For the same reasons, some senators also said they will skip the SONA. Among those of who will boycott it are Senators Francis N. Pangilinan, Panfilo M. Lacson, Aquilino Q. Pimentel and Manuel A. Roxas II.

Speaker and Davao City Rep. Prospero C. Nograles (1st district) denied allegations that the House majority plans on convening Congress into a constituent assembly during the opening of the third regular session and said that the President’s SONA is the only agenda for the day.

"There is no factual and/or legal basis for this unnecessary warning," he said in a text message. — Jhoanna Frances S. Valdez

Moves

Janno Gibbs introduced this segment to show the force that radiates emotion into artistic action. This was through back-to-back production numbers from GMA dance royalty – the boys of SOP composed of Felix Roco, Mico Aytona, Mart Escudero, Miggy Tanchangco, Rainier Castillo and Mark Herras; sexy and beautiful ladies Krissa Mae Arietta, Rich Asuncion, Sherilyn Reyes, Regine Tolentino, Iza Calzado, and Sunshine Dizon.

The boys danced to the tune of Black Eyed Peas' "Boom, Boom, Boom" while the ladies gyrated to a samba medley. They later shared the stage for a fusion of the old and new dance moves.

Style

As presented by Raymond Gutierrez, this segment featured the glamorous portrayal behind the Kapuso network's image as represented by the roster of GMA's Kontrabidas as they introduced the idea of nostalgia of high glam.

Pinoy Idol winner Gretchen Espina took the stage with a medley of songs as the following Kapuso character actors and actresses walked the ramp: Polo Ravales, Gabby Eigenmann, Paolo Contis, Angelu de Leon, Angelika dela Cruz, Jackie Lou Blanco, Sheryl Cruz, Jean Garcia, Celia Rodriguez and Eddie Garcia.

Image

Mike Enriquez introduced the segment which highlights the element of image, as represented by the most respected personalities of GMA News and Public Affairs, who exemplify hard work in delivering a comprehensive and balance reportage of the truths of the times.

While Jett Pangan is singing "Lumiyab Ka," the following men and women of GMA News and Public Affairs, wearing newspaper-inspired suits and gowns, took their individual walks on the stage: Arnold Clavio, Vicky Morales, Susan Enriquez, Suzi Entrata-Abrera, Kara David, Pia Arcangel, Kiko Rustia, Love Añover, Rhea Santos, JC Tiuseco, Connie Sison, Mariz Umali, Howie Severino, Sandra Aguinaldo, and Mel Tiangco.

Heart

Marvin Agustin spoke about heart that embodies the Kapuso network's achievements and downfalls. This segment features the ensemble of GMA's top-caliber comediennes (Tess Bomb, Ruby Rodriguez, Dang Cruz, Mosang, Alyssa Alano and Manilyn Reynes) with the Kapuso child stars (like Buboy Villar, BJ Forbes, and the StarStruck Kids), and the comic duo of Yaya (Michael V.) and Angelina (Ogie Alcasid).

With Moymoy Palaboy's lip-synching video as background, the following male Kapuso comedians also took center stage: Ariel and Maverick, Benjie Paras, Gene Padilla, John "Sweet" Lapus, Arnell Ignacio, Diego Llorica, John Feir, Bearwin Meily, Keempee de Leon, Boy2 Quizon, Mang Enriquez, Epi Quizon, and Leo Martinez.

Soul

Dingdong Dantes was greeted by wild shrieks from his fans as he introduced the next segment focusing on the Kapuso network's principle of enriching the lives of Filipinos through superior delivery of news and entertainment.

With Gian Magdangal bringing so much life while performing "Bring Me To Life," the following Kapuso winged gods and goddesses strutted the catwalk: Bubbles Paraiso, Victor Aliwalas, Bianca Manalo, Luis Alandy, Charisse Solomon, Dex Quindoza, Sheena Halili, Matteo Guidicelli, Jan Manual, Rich Asuncion, Pamela Bianca Manalo, Kevin Santos, Marie Ann Manalo, Mike Tan, Daiana Menezes, Boom Labrusca, Krissa Mae Arietta, Dion Ignacio, and Marian Rivera.

Power

This segment, as introduced by German Moreno, centers on the GMA's resident athletes and sports enthusiasts who stand for the element of power that radiates truth and beauty in modern times.

Janno Gibbs provided the music while some Kapuso stars performed tai-chi and capoeira with dancers and athletes. These stars were Chynna Ortaleza, Pauleen Luna, Vaness del Moral, LJ Reyes, Ryza Cenon, the SexBomb Dancers, and Rhian Ramos.

Sen. Bong Revilla almost went unnoticed as he appeared on the stage before the end of the production number.

We were expecting boxing great Manny Pacquiao and basketball heartthrob Chris Tiu, hosts of Pinoy Records, to appear on this segment but they were both nowhere to be found.

Sound

The next segment, as introduced by Ogie Alcasid, encapsulates the Kapuso network's true formula for producing trendsetting and cutting-edge programs for all Filipinos.

Performing the Oscar-winning song "Jai Ho" were the Kitty Girls and Rochelle Panigilinan; while the following sexy Kapuso stars made their move on the catwalk: Arci Muñoz, Iwa Moto, Arthur Solinap, Glaiza de Castro, Jace Flore, Francine Prieto, Paulo Avelino, Bianca King, John Lopez, Akihiro Sato, and Dingdong Dantes.

Numbers

Michael V. provided the intro for this segment, where the element of numbers gave the chronological narration of GMA's 59 resplendent years in the broadcast industry, as represented by bridal fashion featuring the top Kapuso love teams.

With the beautiful harmony of La Diva (Jonalyn Viray, Aicelle Santos, and Maricris Garcia) singing Filipino love songs, the following Kapuso pairs took centerstage: Marvin Agustin and Pauleen Luna representing the '20s, Dennis Trillo and Jennica Garcia representing the '40s, JC de Vera and Michelle Madrigal representing the '60s, Mark Herras and Jackie Rice representing the '70s, Aljur Abrenica and Kris Bernal representing the '80s, Geoff Eigenmann and Carla Abellana representing the '90s, and Marian Rivera and Mark Anthony Fernandez representing the 2000s.

Reach

Respected broadcaster Mel Tiangco provided the intro for the last segment, the element of reach which marks GMA's growth and development as it connects to Filipinos across the globe through its international channels: GMA Pinoy TV and GMA Life TV.

Leading the finale was none other than Asia's Songbird Regine Velasquez as she sang a medley of inspirational songs, while models wearing Filipiniana costumes designed by three Filipino designers walked on the ramp followed by all the Kapuso stars.

After this, Sen. Bong Revilla provided the farewell message as all the GMA executives, led by CEO and chairman Felipe Gozon, joined the roster of Kapuso stars on the stage.

Missing in action

Noticeably absent at last night's grandiose event were Robin Padilla, Richard Gutierrez, Heart Evangelista, Jolina Magdangal, Joey de Leon, Vic Sotto and girlfriend Pia Guanio, Carmina Villarroel, Jennylyn Mercado, Yasmien Kurdi, Nadine Samonte, Katrina Halili, Alfred Vargas, Paolo Bediones, Allan K, Jaya, Eugene Domingo, Jan Nieto, and most of the stars of the late Douglas Quijano, like Richard Gomez and wife Lucy Torres, Joey Marquez, brothers Anjo and Jomari Yllana, and sisters Janice and Gelli de Belen.

It was understandable that most of the talents of Tito Dougs skipped the GMA anniversary presentation since it was the last night of the talent manager's wake at the Heritage Memorial Chapels, although some of his other talents, like Wendell Ramos and Ryan Yllana, still showed up at the Big Dome.

Richard Gutierrez, one of the biggest stars of the Kapuso network, was also spotted at Tito Doug's wake, along with parents Eddie Gutierrez and Annabelle Rama and sister Ruffa. Unknown to many, Richard was co-managed by the late talent manager, who was cremated on Saturday.

Paolo Bediones is reportedly in Australia for the taping of Survivor Philippines Season 2; Heart Evangelista is in the US; Jolina Magdangal is in Hong Kong for a personal appearance; and Yasmien Kurdi and Nadine Samonte are in Dubai for a show.

Some sidelights

While waiting for his cue for the next segment, Ogie Alcasid provided probably one of the most entertaining moments of the program.

Standing on the side of the stage for more than 10 minutes, Ogie entertained the audience and himself by singing a line or two of different songs while cracking jokes left and right. Too bad that this part won't be aired on TV.

Based on the applause and cheers last night, there is no doubt that Marian Rivera and Dingdong Dantes are still the most popular Kapuso stars. Coming in second is the pair of Aljur Abrenica and Kris Bernal, who will soon be seen in the primetime series All My Life.

Meanwhile, Geoff Eigenmann and Carla Abellana looked so good together. But their appearance on stage did not elicit the same response as Dingdong and Marian or even Aljur and Kris, probably because the viewers have yet to see their chemistry on screen. But if everything works on their side, then their tandem will also become one of the most popular in no time.

Dingdong and Marian never appeared on stage together as they now have different projects, Darna for Marian and Stairway To Heaven for Dingdong. But during the finale, one of the country's most popular love teams came out together.
